What to Look for in a Manufacturing Partner (and Red Flags to Avoid)

Because who you make it with matters just as much as what you make.

Choosing the right manufacturing partner is one of the most important decisions a fashion brand can make. The factory you work with directly affects your product quality, timelines, margins, and overall brand reputation.

At The Fashion Mansion Group, we've guided countless startups and emerging designers through the vetting process—and we’ve seen what works (and what doesn’t).
Whether you're producing locally or overseas, here’s what to look for—and the red flags to avoid—when selecting your apparel manufacturer.

What to Look For in a Manufacturing Partner
1. Category-Specific Expertise
Choose a factory that specializes in your product type—whether it’s denim, activewear, technical outerwear, or knits. A great t-shirt manufacturer may not be the best at structured tailoring.

2. Clear Communication
Consistent, timely, and transparent communication is essential. You should feel heard, and your questions should be answered directly.

3. Sample Quality
Their sample should match your tech pack specifications with accuracy and attention to detail. A great factory won't need three rounds to get it right.

4. Reasonable MOQs (Minimum Order Quantities)
The best partners offer flexibility, especially for newer brands. Look for manufacturers who offer scalable MOQs that grow with your business.

5. Transparent Pricing
Reputable factories provide detailed quotes—including fabric, trims, labor, and overhead. They should also help you understand how pricing changes with volume.

6. Ethical Practices & Certifications
If your brand values sustainability or ethical sourcing, choose partners with certifications like GOTS, WRAP, OEKO-TEX, or Fair Trade.

7. References or Portfolio
Ask for past work or client references. Great manufacturers are proud of their projects and relationships.

Red Flags to Avoid
Poor or Delayed Communication

If emails go unanswered or your concerns are dismissed, expect the same treatment during production.

No Sample Capability
If a manufacturer can’t provide a prototype or won’t do revisions, walk away.

Overpromising
Be cautious of unrealistic timelines, extremely low pricing, or promises to “do everything”—it often results in missed deadlines or poor quality.

No Track Record or Reviews
If you can’t verify their experience, portfolio, or legitimacy, they might be a middleman—or worse.

Hidden Fees
Vague invoices or last-minute added costs are a clear sign of bad business practices.

Disregard for Your Brand Standards
If they cut corners on materials, sizing, or finishings—even after direction—it’s a sign they’re not invested in your success.

The right manufacturing partner will help your brand grow; the wrong one can cost you time, money, and credibility. At The Fashion Mansion Group, we connect our clients with vetted, trusted manufacturing partners who share their standards, timelines, and values.

We don’t just make introductions—we help manage the process, protect your margins, and ensure your production runs are smooth from start to shipment.
