How MOQ Impacts Profit Margins in Fashion Manufacturing

Smarter production starts with understanding your numbers.

In fashion production, few numbers matter more than your MOQ—Minimum Order Quantity. It’s one of the first things a manufacturer will ask, and one of the biggest factors that will affect your pricing, profit margins, and ability to scale.

At The Fashion Mansion Group, we work with new and emerging fashion brands to break down how MOQs work and how to make them work for you—not against you.

What Is MOQ?MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity—the smallest number of units a factory will produce per style, per color, or per size. MOQs vary by factory, product type, and region, and they exist to help manufacturers maintain profitability on their end.
  • Small-batch production: 30–100 units per style
  • Mid-level factory MOQ: 200–500 units
  • Large-scale factory MOQ: 1,000+ units
But here’s where it gets tricky: MOQ directly affects your profit margins.

How MOQ Affects Your Profit Margins
Higher MOQs = Lower Cost Per Unit
The more you produce, the lower your cost per unit. That’s because fixed costs like labor, setup, and sourcing are spread across more garments.
Example:
  • 100 units at $45 = $4,500
  • 500 units at $28 = $14,000
Now you’re saving $17 per unit—which you can reinvest or convert into higher profit margins.
Lower MOQs = Higher Risk, Higher COGS
If you're just starting out, you may want a smaller MOQ to test your market. That’s fine—but be prepared for a higher cost per unit and tighter margins.
This makes it harder to:
  • Compete on wholesale pricing
  • Offer discounts without hurting profits
  • Scale quickly without raising capital

Profit Margin Breakdown

Let’s say your cost per unit is $30 and you sell for $80:
  • Low MOQ (100 units @ $30):
    Gross profit: $50 per unit
But if marketing, shipping, and returns cost $20—you’re only netting $30
  • Higher MOQ (500 units @ $22):
    Gross profit: $58 per unit
Lower COGS = higher margin = more flexibility with marketing & pricing

How to Work Smart with MOQs
At The Fashion Mansion Group, we guide clients to optimize MOQs without overproducing.

Here’s how:
  • Bundle styles to meet fabric MOQs across multiple SKUs
  • Negotiate flexible MOQs with smaller or local factories
  • Test demand with limited DTC runs before going wholesale
  • Work with a production consultant to align quantities with your cash flow and growth plan

Common Mistakes
  • Under ordering to save money but ending up with low margins
  • Overordering just to hit a lower price, and sitting on dead inventory
  • Ignoring hidden costs like shipping, warehousing, and fulfillment
Remember: It’s not just about what you can afford to produce—it’s about what you can afford to sell profitably.

Your MOQ is more than a manufacturing number—it’s a financial decision that shapes your brand’s pricing, flexibility, and ability to grow. Whether you’re launching your first drop or preparing to scale, understanding how MOQ impacts your margins is key to building a healthy business.

At The Fashion Mansion Group, we help brands navigate this balance with custom production strategies, factory connections, and margin-focused consulting.
